(SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO – November 11, 2016) – Puerto Rico Limpio denounces the latest innuendo from EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy’s claim the EPA is “running — not walking” to the exit door. It is a well-known fact that the EPA has failed to close Puerto Rico’s toxic landfills despite internal evidence affirming their pre-existing knowledge that that these landfills are toxic and violate federal law.

“Administrator McCarthy’s claim the EPA is ‘running’ to help the environment is laughable,” said Hiram Torres Montalvo, co-founder of Puerto Rico Limpio. “Just look at the situation with Puerto Rico’s toxic landfills – under the guidance of McCarthy and Judith Enck, the EPA has ignored internal findings that the landfills are in violation of federal law and unsafe. This is a total disregard for the health and welfare of the Puerto Ricans people.  Worse, they’ve even admitted that they make up rules ‘on the fly.’”

Internal EPA documents uncovered by Puerto Rico Limpio expose the depth of outrageous neglect by Gina McCarthy’s EPA and their Region 2 leader, Judith Enck in the face of an “imminent and substantial threat” to Puerto Rican communities from these toxic sites.

“Gina McCarthy and Judith Enck’s policies have forced disadvantaged Puerto Ricans in 20 communities to live next to contaminated ground, water and air, and every American should be outraged by this environmental injustice,” Torres Montalvo added. “In their remaining days in office – and they are literally days – they should endorse Puerto Rico Limpio’s 4-part plan to close the toxic landfills.  If they fail to do so, they should be held legally accountable along with every EPA official who neglected their duty under the law to protect our people fairly.”
