GINA MCCARTHY’S LEGACY: TOXIC DUMPS IN PUERTO RICO

ginamccarthy8x10(SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO – November 21, 2016) – Ahead of EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy’s “legacy” speech today at the National Press Club, Puerto Rico Limpio lambasts the Administrator’s ongoing neglect of the toxic situation in Puerto Rico she’s known about for decades.

“Administrator McCarthy’s legacy in Puerto Rico will be one of allowing toxic dumps to operate,” said Hiram Torres Montalvo, co-founder of Puerto Rico Limpio.“It’s a sad day for the Obama Administration which has proclaimed their commitment to the environment, yet, turned its back on the 3.5 million American citizens living in Puerto Rico.”

Recently McCarthy stated her agency is “running – not walking” to her final day in office, but Puerto Rico waits for the EPA to close up to 20 landfills that the Agency has admitted pose “an imminent danger to human health and the environment.”  Administrator McCarthy and her deputies Judith Enck and Carmen Guerrero ignored multiple EPA internal documents detailing recommendations to enforce the law and close the landfills. This dereliction of duty underscores the abject failure of the EPA in Puerto Rico.

“McCarthy, Enck and Guerrero have ignored bipartisan pleas from lawmakers to immediately close the toxic landfills in Puerto Rico. This is a failure to protect 3.5 million American citizens,” added Torres Montalvo.
